Judge us after five years not 100 days

Secretary of State for Wales Cheryl Gillan responds to our study of the coalition’s first 100 days in power in yesterday’s Daily Post ONE of the enduring memories I have of my first day as Secretary of State for Wales on May 12 was walking through the doors of Gwydyr House, home of the Welsh Office in Whitehall, to see joists propping up the floor of my room.

The first floor was on the brink of collapse following years of neglect of the building by the previous Government.

Those joists have now come to symbolise for me the damage inflicted on Wales and the rest of the UK by the mismanagement of the previous Government as they resorted to desperate makeshift measures to support a UK economy taken to the brink of collapse by extravagance and mismanagement.

While my floor can be mended the economic legacy we inherited will take longer to fix.

We inherited an economy built on unsustainable public sector spending rather than private sector growth.

After the longest and deepest recession since the Second World War, Britain needs to build a new economic model founded on the principles of freedom, fairness and responsibility.

The most urgent priority has been to tackle the record budget deficit. It is only by doing this that we can restore confidence in our economy and support the recovery.

The tough decisions we make affect everyone. But they have to be taken to restore balance to the economy and to send out a message that Britain is open for business.

Confidence and stability, rather than debt and uncertainty will create the wealth we need in Wales.

During official visits in the first months in this job, I have seen the drive and commitment that Welsh businesses and workers have to succeed and grow.

From fledgling enterprises housed within the Technium Optic at St Asaph, to Corus, the internationally recognised manufacturer with its plants across Wales, I have been hugely impressed by the skills we have in Wales and the cooperation between management and workers.

The Chancellor’s emergency Budget set out a comprehensive blueprint to eliminate the bulk of the deficit over the course of this Parliament, providing the country with a credible plan to live within its means. This will be followed with a Comprehensive Spending Review on October 20.

There are difficult choices ahead but given Labour’s legacy of debt and waste, they are unavoidable.

The prize of turning our economy around is well-paid jobs, thriving businesses and rising living standards which provide more for our families and let us move forward together.

Unemployment in Wales remains stubbornly and unacceptably high. The prosperity gap between Wales and the rest of the UK is still too wide. And over recent years we have lost too many jobs and employers.

More than half a million people in Wales are now considered economically inactive – many of whom are trapped in a cycle of worklessness which stifles talent and opportunity.

That is why the coalition Government is taking action to revolutionise the existing failed benefits system and replace it with a single ‘welfare to work’ scheme that will make it easier to help people into work, is fairer to those who contribute to the welfare state, and continues to support to those who need its assistance.

We will work with the Welsh Assembly Government to help people into work, and to make it clear that work does pay.

This type of partnership working is at the heart of the coalition Government’s agenda of respect with the devolved institutions.

David Cameron sealed this new relationship by becoming the first UK Prime Minister to visit the Senedd in Cardiff Bay, within days of taking office.

The new architecture of government means a changed relationship between Westminster and Cardiff, with four political parties now involved in Government in Wales.

While the concept of a coalition government is a well- established feature of the Welsh political landscape, a coalition in Westminster is in itself both novel and exciting.

The old political system was broken, and our Government is not shying away from its responsibility to restore public trust in our democracy.

We are determined to rebalance the relationship between the citizen and the state.

The spirit of mutual respect has already enabled us to deliver to the Assembly Government the long-awaited Sustainable Housing LCO, which faced delay after delay under the previous administration.

As Welsh Secretary, one of my first priorities was to implement a plan for delivering a referendum on further law-making powers for Wales in the first quarter of 2011

These are great places to

These are great places to get items that you never even knew you needed. You know ? those things that you?ve never heard of, but once you see them you buy them.

Farm supply stores can be a great place for your pet supply needs. Because these stores are usually based on wholesaling, they are often cheaper than other places. The downside is that you may have to buy larger quantities than you intended. But if you plan on keeping your pet, it may be worth it in the long run.

Online auction sites can be great places to buy some pet supply needs. For those items that you don?t have to buy over and over and are higher priced items, this is a great way to get a bargain. As with other items on auction sites, these items may be a great deal if not many people bid on them. One thing that you need to remember is to check shipping prices. It may seem like a great deal until you add in shipping. Find all costs before buying.

Some of your pet supply needs can be found at any of your general retailers.

Refinishing your Bathroom’s

Refinishing your Bathroom’s Baseboard Heating Element Covers can play a major role in restoring a new look to your bathroom.

If your home is a few years old and has hot water baseboard heating in it, chances are your bathroom baseboard heating element covers are rusted and in need of refinishing.

Bathrooms, as well as Kitchens, Laundry rooms and basements, are more likely to see rusty baseboard heating element covers due to the high moisture levels and condensation that typically occur in them.

There are several rust resistant baseboard heating element covers available on the market today, however it can be very expensive to replace your existing baseboard heating elements with these new products. The other alternative is to refinish and restore your existing baseboard heating element covers with a little sweat equity.

Refinishing or restoring baseboard heating elements is something simple enough for a DIY homeowner to do (with the right knowledge) and can save significant dollars. Installing new baseboard heating elements, on the other hand, typically involves the cost of an entire new heating element and a plumber.

Most hot water baseboard heating elements can be easily dissassembled by simply pulling away the front covers from the bracket assembly.

Most small ABA sections don’t last longer

Most small ABA sections don’t last longer than 2-3 minutes. Why? Because if they were repeated for longer periods of time, the music would become dull and repetitious.

BUT, if we create another section of music

– the C section, it provides the relief the ear is searching for and we can then repeat the entire thing again so the form would look like this: ABACABA. This form extends ABA and provides the necessary contrast to create longer pieces.

You must take

You must take into consideration the mortgage payoff, taxes, and real estate agents? commissions before finalizing the worth of your house. Ensure again that it is neither under- nor overpriced.

The next task is to present your house to prospective buyers in a respectable condition. For this you could get the help of a professional home inspector, who could recommend what improvements are needed before you put the house up for sale. The exteriors of the house should be attractive and well-maintained. The outside areas should be neat and clean. It is a good idea to touch up the interiors wherever they are damaged. It will be helpful to replace any bathroom and kitchen fittings if they are worn out or leaking.

At this point, you are ready to put out advertisements and flyers or even contact agents to sell the house.

It isn’t just about the

It isn’t just about the expense either, but also about the hassle. When you are moving and especially when you are relocating to another city – this is the best time to get rid of the things you really don’t need.

4. Have a rummage sale. This is a good way to get rid of those things, and you might even raise enough money to pay for the move. Again, it is best to be rid of your things before the move. We went to a after-the-move rummage sale the other day. What a shame to pack and pay to move all those things just to have to work to sell them for pennies later.

5. Start packing early. not only is it difficult to predict how long it will take until you are doing it, but you never know how much time you’ll have later.

Do you grow

Do you grow tired living in the same place year after year? Perhaps its the nomadic instincts within us that beckons us to move on to new places. To leave the old, familiar grounds and discover new adventures in distant lands.

Sometimes the old way of doing things break down. They become unmaintainable and beyond repair. These are the times we feel like running away to somewhere new.

Those of us who live in large cities, commuting everyday, working 9 to 5, feel the dullness of repetition the most. Working and living in the same place year after year, leading the same kind of life, with the same kind of people, can bring us down. For better or worse, everyone needs change.

Perhaps influenced by movies and books, and a few personal travel experiences – I like to imagine white sandy beaches and clear blue waters. I like to take quick mental flights to lush forests, azure sky, green fields and tranquil waterfalls.

Maybe establish a business venture, invest in real estate or get tax benefits.

Anniversaries are celebrated by

Anniversaries are celebrated by gifts that are made of different materials for each year that a couple has spent together. The first year is a gift of paper, and each year after that, the gifts become more and more valuable as is the couple?s time spent together.

Two milestone anniversary celebrations are the 25th and 50th. The 25th is celebrated with silver, and the 50th is celebrated with gold. It is said that this tradition originated in medieval Europe when wives were given a silver wreath to celebrate their 25th years of marriage and a gold wreath for 50. Sixty years together (if anyone is so lucky) is celebrated with diamonds that is said to be a tradition passed on by Queen Victoria when she celebrated her Diamond Jubilee after sixty years on the British throne.

?No affiliation? could

?No affiliation? could very well mean, in fact probably does mean, too much ego. (Follow the link below for one example.)

Time to Black Belt should be at least 3 ? years

? Minimum. With all tests passed and none missed, but will most likely take longer. When you find those ?Black Belt Programs? that guarantee this milestone (some even in two years) turn around and run, don?t walk.

Engaged instructors and students

? you may not have the background to know if the karate is good quality, but you?ll know if the instructors and students are motivated. Do they speak respectfully to each other, do they bow respectfully, do they remain focused and work hard the entire class? Are they having fun while doing these things?

Students follow the pace of the class

? And does the instructor push until all students are obviously challenged?

Black Belt is not the end

? The sign says ?Black Belt Is My Goal!? So what about after Black Belt? First-hand, I?ve experienced the problem of weak post-Black-Belt instruction.

The CES show featured

The CES show featured many new plasma televisions that are 1080p capable for the next generation of HD video, but that’s not all. There is a plasma by Panasonic that is a unbelievable 103 inches diagonal. This television first went on sale for $150,000.00 retail. This is way up from 2005′s show that featured a Samsung plasma of 80 inches. That television only cost around $40,000. So, you can see that it will be a couple of years until most house holds have huge plasmas in their media rooms.

Some other great news for HD TVs is the medium that is used to connect their components has gotten even easier. DVI was a great improvement over component video cables a couple of years ago, but now there is HDMI.
